Student Planning Guide

Appropriate and rigorous course selection is a very important part of preparing to achieve life's goals. The Discovery Center website and the Student Planning Guide have been designed to assist students in creating the road map to their future.

The Student Planning Guide should be used as a tool to plan and keep record of high school course selections and career goals, with the following message in mind: When seeking employment, technical training, a college degree, apprenticeship, or a job promotion, the high school transcript is usually requested. This is a very simple way of asking what courses were taken to prepare for the future. Although it is difficult for a student to know what courses to choose because the future is filled with uncertainties, the best policy to follow when making course selections is to take the courses that are challenging but within the student's capabilities. Students who take the easy way through high school may regret it later, because it could mean they will not be accepted into an institution of higher learning, not be able to begin the career they chose, or not receive a future job promotion.
