National Honor Society




The National Honor Society is dedicated to promoting service, character, leadership and scholarship at Fort LeBoeuf.

The purpose of the organization shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of Fort LeBoeuf High School.  We also strive to honor students who demonstrate the high standards of the National Honor Society and contribute to the betterment of individuals, the school, and the community.  (Fort LeBoeuf High School, Sentinel Chapter Bylaws, Article I Section 2)

Membership is an honor bestowed upon a student.  Selection for membership is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service.  Sophomores and juniors who have attended Fort LeBoeuf High School for at least one semester and who have a cumulative grade point average of at least 97% shall be invited to become a candidate for membership.  Selection of members is determined by the Faculty Council and is consistent with the rules and regulations of the National Honor Society as outlined in the National Constitution and Handbook.  All candidates will be notified in writing of their selection or non-selection to membership.

  • Food Drive (benefiting Waterford and Summit Food Pantries)
  • Snowball (mid-year dance to raise funds for three $1000 scholarships)
  • Valentine's Day Matchmaker (to raise funds for three $1000 scholarships)
  • Event Ushering
  • Blood Drives (four per school year)
  • Pennies for Patients (benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society)
  • Middle School Mentoring
  • Peer Tutoring

Scholarships: Three $1,000 scholarships are awarded to FLB seniors who exemplify the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

What Makes a Good Candidate

Character

The student who demonstrates good character:

  • upholds the principles of morality, ethics, and honesty

Leadership

The student who exercises leadership:

  • takes a constructive lead in classroom and school activities

  • demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities
  • uses influence on peers in upholding school ideals
  • is able to delegate responsibilities
  • exemplifies positive attitudes and inspires positive behavior in others

Service

The student who performs service:

  • puts service to others above self-interest
  • gives time, effort, and talent, not for personal gain but for his/her class, school or community as a whole
  • shows courtesy to teachers, other students and visitors
  • represents the school in various kinds of competition
  • renders service through the school to the community
